Why Choose Austin Video Solutions for Film Scanning?
Old film is fragile. Every year, reels become more brittle, warped, dusty, and faded. Vinegar syndrome sets in on acetate stock. Color shifts become permanent. The goal isn't just to copy the image โ it's to preserve as much usable detail as possible while keeping the original reel safe.
Each frame individually captured โ not re-recorded off a wall
Basic color balancing to compensate for decades of fading
Nothing touches the film surface during capture
Your film never enters a mail system
One person handles your project start to finish
Most film scanning projects finished within a week
If your reels contain weddings, vacations, childhood memories, or footage of relatives who are no longer with you โ this is the kind of material worth digitizing carefully the first time.
Film Formats We Scan
Austin Video Solutions scans the most common small-gauge home movie formats.
๐ฝ๏ธ 8mm Film
The original home movie format from the 1930sโ1960s. Also called "Regular 8" or "Double 8."
๐๏ธ Super 8 Film
The upgraded format popular from 1965โ1980s, with a larger image area and improved quality.
๐ฅ 16mm Film
Larger format used for educational, documentary, and some higher-quality home movies.
โ Not Sure?
Most clients just know they have "old movie reels." Bring them in โ we'll identify the format before any work begins.

The result: digital video that's dramatically easier to watch, share, and preserve than leaving memories on aging reels.
Why Frame-by-Frame Film Scanning Matters
Bargain services often rely on "telecine" or projector-and-camera methods that re-record a projected image. That approach introduces flicker, hot spots, softness, uneven exposure, and unstable motion.
โ Projection-Based Transfer
- Camera records projected image off wall/screen
- Flicker, hot spots, and uneven exposure
- Soft, unstable motion
- Film can be damaged by heat from projector
โ Frame-by-Frame 2K Scanning
- Each frame individually lit and captured
- Flicker-free, stable output
- Cleaner detail and consistent exposure
- Non-contact โ nothing touches the film

Film Scanning FAQ
Will scanning damage my old film?
No. Our scanning process is non-contact โ nothing touches the film surface during capture. This is safer than running film through a projector.
What resolution do I get?
2K resolution (1920ร1440), which captures all the detail present in 8mm and Super 8 film without creating unnecessarily massive files.
Can faded or scratched film be improved?
Basic color correction and dust removal are included with every scan. For heavily damaged film, we offer restoration add-ons that can repair scratches, stabilize shrinkage, and reconstruct missing details. Ask at drop-off.
Do I get my original reels back?
Yes. All original film is returned alongside your new digital files. We recommend keeping originals as a physical backup, properly stored in a cool, dry place.
How much does film scanning cost?
$0.49 per foot. A standard 50-foot reel costs approximately $24.50. A 200-foot reel is about $98. We measure precisely at drop-off.
My film smells like vinegar โ is it too late?
"Vinegar syndrome" indicates acetate film degradation. We can often still scan it, but the film is physically deteriorating. Digitizing now preserves what's left before it becomes unrecoverable. We handle such film with extra care and cleaning.
What if I'm not sure what format I have?
Bring everything. We'll identify whether your reels are 8mm, Super 8, 16mm, or something else at drop-off โ no charge for format identification.
Ready to Convert Your Film Reels to Digital?
Film does not improve with age. The longer it sits, the greater the risk of fading, brittleness, and permanent damage. Austin Video Solutions offers professional 8mm film scanning in Austin with local drop-off, frame-by-frame 2K capture, and personal service from start to finish.
