Austin Video Solutions is an owner-operated media digitization and video editing studio in South Austin. Since 2011, AVS has helped families, filmmakers, businesses, attorneys, and archive-minded clients move aging analog media into modern digital files that are easier to watch, share, edit, organize, and preserve.

The studio handles videotape, 8mm and Super 8 film, photos, slides, negatives, audio recordings, DVDs, and existing digital footage. Projects range from a single family VHS tape to larger mixed-media collections that need organized filenames, editable masters, cloud delivery, or professional post-production.

What Media Can Austin Video Solutions Digitize?

AVS works with a broad range of legacy media. Common videotape formats include VHS, VHS-C, S-VHS, Hi8, Video8, Digital8, MiniDV, HDV, Betamax, and U-matic. Film services cover 8mm and Super 8 home-movie reels. Photo services include prints, slides, and negatives. Audio services include cassette and other legacy audio formats supported by the studio’s current equipment.

If you are not sure what format you have, you do not need to identify it before booking. Mixed or unlabeled media can be reviewed at drop-off, and the transfer workflow can be matched to the source.

Why the Playback Stage Matters

Analog media is not just a file waiting to be copied. The playback machine, tape condition, recording speed, tracking, time-base stability, audio path, and capture chain can all affect what reaches the digital file.

For videotape, AVS uses professional Sony and Panasonic playback equipment and monitors the capture rather than treating every cassette as identical. Time-base correction or other signal stabilization is used where appropriate. Difficult EP/SLP tapes, marginal recordings, and tapes that do not track cleanly may benefit from trying a different deck or adjusting the playback workflow before deciding that a defect is permanently recorded on the tape.

For a deeper explanation, see why EP/SLP VHS tapes can be harder to digitize and the guide to diagnosing tape-related playback faults.

Choosing the Right Digital File

There is no single best output for every project. The useful format depends on what you plan to do after the transfer.

Output Best for Current tape-transfer price
MP4 Watching on modern devices, Smart TVs, phones, computers, and sharing with family $25 per started 2-hour block
Apple ProRes 422 Editing, documentary work, color correction, and master files $25 per started 2-hour block
Lossless Maximum-fidelity preservation, restoration, and advanced archival workflows $52.50 per started 2-hour block

Standard MP4 delivery for NTSC analog videotape is prepared for modern screens as a smooth progressive H.264 file while preserving the original 4:3 image geometry. That means the picture is not stretched to widescreen or cropped simply to fill a television. AI/ML upscaling, advanced restoration, heavy noise reduction, color correction, and stabilization are separate services when a project needs them.

8mm and Super 8 Film Scanning

Film requires a different workflow than videotape. AVS scans 8mm and Super 8 film frame by frame at 2K rather than projecting the reel onto a screen and recording the projection. Frame-by-frame scanning provides a more stable digital source and is better suited to preservation and later editing.

Current 8mm and Super 8 scanning is $0.49 per foot. A typical 50-foot reel contains roughly three minutes of footage, although exact running time varies with film speed and how much film is actually on the reel.

Photo, Slide, and Negative Scanning

Printed photographs, slides, and negatives can be scanned for family archives, memorial videos, restoration, digital backup, reprints, or creative editing projects. AVS handles photos individually rather than feeding irreplaceable originals through a high-speed bulk document scanner.

Current photo, slide, and negative scanning is $0.49 per image. Higher-resolution or restoration-oriented workflows can be discussed when the source material or final use calls for them.

Video Editing After Digitization

Digitization preserves the source. Editing turns that source into something people actually want to watch.

AVS can take newly digitized tapes, film scans, photographs, phone footage, camera files, interviews, audio, and existing digital media and build finished videos from them. Typical projects include memorial and celebration-of-life videos, family archive compilations, anniversary videos, sports highlights, documentary source assemblies, business videos, training material, and custom presentations.

Because digitization and editing are handled in the same studio, an archive can move from analog originals to organized source files and then directly into a finished edit without handing the project between unrelated vendors. Video editing is billed at $85 per hour, with an estimated range provided after the source material, goals, and deliverables are reviewed.

Local, Owner-Handled Service

Austin Video Solutions is not a warehouse transfer operation. Benjamin “Ben” Dotto handles projects directly from intake through capture, file preparation, and return of the original media. The studio is private and appointment-only in South Austin, TX 78748. The exact address is supplied after booking.

That owner-operated model is useful when media is personal, fragile, unusual, legally sensitive, or part of a larger archive where naming, organization, privacy, or delivery requirements matter.

How Long Does Digitization Take?

Most standard tape projects are completed in about 1–3 business days. Larger collections, fragile media, film scanning, restoration, or editing projects may take longer. If a project has a memorial, production, legal, or event deadline, contact AVS before booking so the current queue and required workflow can be considered.

How to Start a Project

  1. Gather the media. You do not need to sort every tape or know every format.
  2. Decide how you want to use the files. Watching, sharing, editing, restoration, and preservation can point to different output choices.
  3. Book a South Austin drop-off. No payment is collected simply for making the appointment.
  4. Review the scope at intake. AVS can confirm formats, quantities, delivery options, and any special handling requirements.

For current rates, see the Services & Pricing page. When you are ready, book a drop-off appointment, or call/text (512) 518-3188.
