Why Digitize Now?

Analog media does not last forever. This is physics, not a sales pitch.

The Reality of Analog Media Decay

Format What's Happening
Magnetic Tape (VHS, Hi8, etc.) Loses signal strength over time. Oxide layer can shed. Playback quality becomes less predictable.
Film Stock (8mm, Super 8) Fades, warps, becomes brittle. Color shifts occur over time.
Photos & Slides Yellowing, fading, emulsion cracking over decades.

What Digital Files Help With

  • Preserved for future generations — Digital files don't wear out, stretch, or grow mold
  • Easily shareable — Send a link to siblings, AirDrop clips, post to family chats
  • Accessible on modern devices — Watch on phones, tablets, Smart TVs, laptops
  • Cloud backup ready — Upload to Google Drive, Dropbox, or iCloud

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to clean my tapes before bringing them in?

No. Austin Video Solutions handles all cleaning and preparation in-house using professional equipment. Bringing dirty or moldy tapes is fine — we'll assess the condition and advise on what's recoverable.

What format should I choose for my digital files?

MP4 — Best for watching on TVs, phones, and sharing online. Delivered as 1440×1080, 59.94 fps, H.264 — deinterlaced and formatted for 4:3 content on modern screens with no stretching or cropping. ProRes — Best for editing, color grading, and keeping a high-quality master. Lossless — Best for archival preservation and future restoration workflows. We'll help you decide based on your needs at drop-off.

I have a tape stuck inside a camcorder. Can you help?

Yes. Bring the camcorder and its power cable to the appointment and we can help extract the tape. Once it is out, we will assess whether it is playable and how to proceed with the transfer.

How long will my digital files last?

Indefinitely, if properly backed up. We recommend the 3-2-1 backup strategy: 3 copies, on 2 different media types, with 1 copy offsite (cloud). Digital files don't degrade like tape — your biggest risk is hardware failure, which backups solve.

Can you restore damaged or degraded tapes?

Standard transfer includes professional playback, capture monitoring, signal handling, and basic quality-control checks. Restoration work — such as noise reduction, color correction, stabilization, or AI-assisted upscaling — is a separate service, quoted individually based on scope and source condition.

What if I'm not sure what formats I have?

Bring everything. Austin Video Solutions handles VHS, VHS-C, Hi8, Video8, Digital8, MiniDV, Betamax, 8mm/Super 8 film, slides, negatives, audio cassettes, microcassettes, MiniDiscs, and more. We'll identify every format at drop-off and build your quote from there.
